These baskets were revolutionary! Half the basket = half the weight. Well it's not like people up until the mid 70s didn't think of smaller baskets, it's just that course grooming hadn't advanced far enough so that you didn't need a frisbee on the bottom of your pole to keep from sinking 3 feet in.
Exel of Finland stormed onto the market at the 1976 winter Olympics in Innsbruck with fiberglass poles and these funny-looking yellow baskets. But racers glommed onto them, and they soon became very popular. Moose was an Exel user during his illustrious kiddie racing career in the late 70s and early 80s.
Well the problem with plastic baskets is that they occasionally break, and when they do your poles sink up to your armpits. No good!
