Old skis don't get much cooler than this. Vintage early 1960s metal-edged backcountry or "fjellski" from Splitkein of Oslo. If you've been following along, you know by now that a "fjell" is a mountain in Norway.

Boy are these pricey! But that's because they are brought back to the USA by Moose, who has to buy two seats in business class each time he goes to Norway to buy stuff, because, well, he's a moose. Originally bought at Tor Takle sporting goods in Bergen, these skis have also traveled by train to the snø, as evidenced by the rail tag pasted on the top of one of the skis. No, I am not removing that. They used superglue to put those things on. They're a real pain to get off.

Back to Splitkein. Gresvig got access to the Ullevoldsæter/Østbye patent after Peter Østbye had to surrender his ownership (including the Splitkein plant) as punishment for being a Nazi sympathizer during the Second World War. Peter you big fat dummy! But Peter's loss is our gain, as Splitkein went on to make some gorgeous skis, from these metal-edgers to racing skis that carried Pål Tyldum to victory in the 50k in Sapporo in '72.

These skis also feature a classic pair of Gresvig Kahdahar bindings, which was the de facto ski touring binding until the mid 1960s. The waterslide decals are almost completely unblemished, and the undersides of the tips have an old-school branding. These boards will sizzle when they hit the snow, or lean in the corner of your den!
