If I could pick one make/model of wood skis that is most sought after by enthusiasts, it's birch base Järvinens. Well, here they are. Esko Järvinen of Lahti, Finland, was already an accomplished ski racer when he decided to apply his knowledge to the manufacture of skis. His skis were heavily marketed in the USA, hence the domestic interest that still exists for the brand. Birch base, balsa core skis were the lightest (and most fragile!) racing skis available. Järvinen wood skis are also very narrow; only a couple of mm wider than modern racing skis. This example, the last version of top-of-the line Järvinens, also featured a narrow, high point "javelin" tip, which had the habit of getting caught on things, often causing premature death for the ski.
The general fragility of these skis makes this pair a survivor, and one that has grown more beautiful with age! Skifabrikk techs took their time to restore the tops and bases of these skis to maximize appearance and functionality, and the results are impressive. While not a "numbers matching" pair - wood racing skis had a tendency to break easily so it was not uncommon for two skis from different original pairs to be brought together - these skis are identical in camber, graphics, and base condition. There are a few nicks and dings that have happened over time, but they do not affect function.
Skifabrikk was fortunate to find a stash of brand new 3-pin "Finnish-style" clamp bindings a few years ago, and a pair has been mounted on these skis to replace the 4-pin example that came with the skis when they were purchased in Finland earlier this year. Finland stuck with 4-pin 75mm bindings until the switch over to 50mm 3-pin and Adidas 38mm occurred (mid 70s) so we are pleased to be able to offer "modern" style bindings with vintage look.
NOTE: The bindings will be removed prior to shipment of the skis to prevent damage to the bases. If the buyer does not want the bindings, Skifabrikk will reduce the price of the skis by $10.
