These skis are so good-looking that they have more attitude than a 15-year-old.  This is a matching numbers, 210cm "Kilpa Populär" model that is the step below the top-of-the-line Erikoiskilpas.  Kilpa Populär means "popular racing", or loosely translated, a racing ski for the rest of us.  The skis are heavier and wider than the top racing skis, which isn't necessarily bad, especially if you are skiing off-track.

Järvinens are by far the most popular vintage skis that we sell.  Esko Järvinen of Lahti, Finland, was already an accomplished ski racer when he decided to apply his knowledge to the manufacture of skis.  His skis were heavily marketed in the USA, hence the domestic interest that still exists for the brand.

The construction of these skis is unique, something we haven't come across before.  While bases are usually 4-5 horizontally lined (sometimes with edges) hickory or birch strips, these skis seem to be manufactured with 30-40 vertical hickory laminations, giving a "pinstripe" appearance.  This is a construction method that may have been tested by Järvinen to see if it provided extra camber stiffness; at any rate it did not become a common method.

As with all skis from this era, there are a few dings that Skifafrikk has expertly repaired; in the case of these skis they were once hung on a wall with small screws drilled through at each end.  We have plugged and smoothed over the affected areas so they are barely noticeable.  Usability is not affected.

NOTE: The original 4-pin bindings will be removed prior to shipment of the skis to prevent damage to the bases.  If the buyer does not want the bindings, Skifabrikk will reduce the price of the skis by $10.
