Scott Sports has been a leading manufacturer of alpine ski poles since the 1950s. In the early 1970s they decided to make a foray into cross-country, and started at the top - furnishing the US ski team with aluminum poles similar to this pair. At a time when bamboo was still the dominant material for Nordic poles, the aluminum pole was lighter and more durable. Aluminum was replaced in the mid 1970s by carbonfiber and other advanced materials - so these poles represent a brief period in the evolution of cross-country ski gear.
Literally chipped out of a snowbank last winter at a vintage store in Hayward, WI. Oh the stories these poles could tell!
