Bamboo poles were sometimes referred to as "Tonkin" poles due to where the wood was sourced from - the land surrounding the Gulf of Tonkin - modern day Vietnam and China. Liljedahl was the dominant ski pole manufacturer in Norway in the 60s and 70s, continuing to this day as Swix.
