Here at Skifabrikk we don't know a lot about alpine skiing, but we DO know a cool item when we see it. While paging through the ads on our favorite Finnish buying site, we spotted this beauty and were hooked. Not sure why this helmet ended up in Finland, but according to the owner it had last been used as a riding helmet for excursions on his scooter - a very practical use.
Made in Austria, this "Olympia Polymot" helmet closely resembles those worn by famous ski racers of that era such as Karl Schranz and Franz Klammer. Remember this was back in the days when only downhill racers wore helmets, not every skier like today. Fair to say that this example would have provided some pretty good protection in the case of a bad fall.
We can't control what you do with this helmet once you buy it, but we CAN say that we are not promoting it as safe for use as protective headwear - there are better options on the market for that. But it sure is cool to look at and recalls an era of ski racing when the courses were fast, the equipment iffy, and the participants certifiably insane.
