Eggen skis were manufactured from the late 60s until the early 80s at the Engerdal Skifabrikk in east-central Norway, on the border with Sweden. Gjermund Eggen, hero of the 1966 Nordic World Championships in Oslo, lent his name to the brand and supported its growth after his racing career ended.

These skis are a remarkable find - never mounted, never used, pulled from a basement during a recent buying trip to Norway. The "Type 1" model was the lightest wood racing ski made by Eggen, and this pair weighs a remarkable 1535gm which is only slightly more than current fiberglass racing skis. The brand was an innovator when it came to the design of skis, layering wood in a manner to allow air channels in the ski, reducing weight. The birch base was preferred by racers due to its lightness compared to more common hickory, and its performance in certain snow conditions.

NOTE: per picture, there is a small piece of hickory missing from the lower edge of one of the skis. The last of the line for Karhu wood ski production - these skis were produced around the time when fiberglass skis were taking over. Aside from the (clumsy) binding mounting, these skis are UNUSED, untarred, unwaxed, with expected dings and scratches for a pair of skis their age. The bases are highly-sought birch, with hickory edges. The stickers at the top identify "Ski-Shop Sandberg", a defunct retailer possibly in Tampere, Finland - this is where the skis were recently acquired.

Helsinki-based Karhu (Finnish for "bear") has equipped skiers ranging from the Finnish army to World Champions such as Harri Kirvesniemi. They focus more now on footwear and apparel; the former still bearing the "M" striping that refers to "mestari", the Finnish word for champion. Fun fact: in the 50s Karhu used a three-stripes branding on its footwear, but sold it to a fledgling German sports equipment maker.

BINDING NOTES: These skis come with a ham-fisted pair of non-functional 3 pin bindings. Someone took a pair of 71mm bindings and tried to expand them to the norm - before Rottefella standardized "nordic norm" at 75mm there were a variety of widths. Also, they hand drilled the screw holes, so they are in no standard place on the skis. If you are going to put NNN (modern) bindings on these skis then you'll need to plug these holes and balance/mount. If you want to use 75mm, bear in mind that these skis are very narrow and the screw hole placement on older 3 pin bindings will be too wide. In the early 70s Rottefella started moving the two bottom screw holes slightly closer together to accommodate the narrower skis that were being made.

The black heel plate was left on because it was very well done. Before you rip this off, consider that this is a very classic (and inexpensive) look for older skis from the Nordics, and functions just as well as the variety of heel plate systems that were sold in USA and Canada.

Skifabrikk ski techs have over 50 years of experience skiing, racing, and preparing cross-country skis, both wood and fiberglass, so contact us with any questions. Well, here they are. Esko Järvinen of Lahti, Finland, was already an accomplished ski racer when he decided to apply his knowledge to the manufacture of skis. His skis were heavily marketed in the USA, hence the domestic interest that still exists for the brand. Birch base, balsa core skis were the lightest (and most fragile!) racing skis available. Järvinen wood skis are also very narrow; only a couple of mm wider than modern racing skis. This example, the last version of top-of-the line Järvinens, also featured a narrow, high point "javelin" tip, which had the habit of getting caught on things, often causing premature death for the ski.

The general fragility of these skis makes this pair a survivor, and one that has grown more beautiful with age! Skifabrikk techs took their time to restore the tops and bases of these skis to maximize appearance and functionality, and the results are impressive. While not a "numbers matching" pair - wood racing skis had a tendency to break easily so it was not uncommon for two skis from different original pairs to be brought together - these skis are identical in camber, graphics, and base condition. There are a few nicks and dings that have happened over time, but they do not affect function.

Skifabrikk was fortunate to find a stash of brand new 3-pin "Finnish-style" clamp bindings a few years ago, and a pair has been mounted on these skis to replace the 4-pin example that came with the skis when they were purchased in Finland earlier this year. Finland stuck with 4-pin 75mm bindings until the switch over to 50mm 3-pin and Adidas 38mm occurred (mid 70s) so we are pleased to be able to offer "modern" style bindings with vintage look.

NOTE: The bindings will be removed prior to shipment of the skis to prevent damage to the bases. Oddvar Brå won his only individual Olympic or VM gold medal. Lastly, of course, the infamous "brakk staven" men's 4x10km relay took place at VM ‘82. Swix was launching a rebrand of their pole line (retiring the Liljedahl marque), but Oddvar Brå's boron didn't get the memo, snapping during a race to the finish line in a tussle with Soviet Alexsandr Zavyalov.

Well that has little to do with these skis, but it's fun history. Lillehammer-based Madshus is one of two Norwegian survivors of the nordic industry shake-out that occurred in the mid-70s when fiberglass skis replaced wood as the material of choice. Unlike their neighbors, the carpetbagging wax company, Madshus has been in Lillehammer for over 100 years. Historically they were a manufacturer of solid turski and fjellski (backcountry), but along the way picked up a few VM/OG medals - Madshus skis were popular among elite Norwegian women in the 60s and 70s. The acquisition of the Landsem brand in the early 80s gave the company additional market reach. Like Detroit in the 80s, the Norwegian ski industry ignored an easily-predictable "storm of the century" in this case it was the introduction of plastic base, fiberglass skis to cross-country skiing in the early 70s.
