Eggen skis were manufactured from the late 60s until the early 80s at the Engerdal Skifabrikk in east-central Norway, on the border with Sweden. Gjermund Eggen, hero of the 1966 Nordic World Championships in Oslo, lent his name to the brand and supported its growth after his racing career ended.

These skis are a remarkable find - never mounted, never used, pulled from a basement during a recent buying trip to Norway. The "Type 1" model was the lightest wood racing ski made by Eggen, and this pair weighs a remarkable 1535gm which is only slightly more than current fiberglass racing skis. The brand was an innovator when it came to the design of skis, layering wood in a manner to allow air channels in the ski, reducing weight. The birch base was preferred by racers due to its lightness compared to more common hickory, and its performance in certain snow conditions.

NOTE: per picture, there is a small piece of hickory missing from the lower edge of one of the skis. Oddvar Brå won his only individual Olympic or VM gold medal. Bill Koch complemented his silver at the '76 Olympics with the only cross-country world championship medal (bronze in the 30k) ever won by an American - this record held up until 2015 when USA G.O.A.T Jessie Diggins and Caitlin Compton Gregg finished 2-3 in the 10k free. Lastly, of course, the infamous "brakk staven" men's 4x10km relay took place at VM ‘82. Swix was launching a rebrand of their pole line (retiring the Liljedahl marque), but Oddvar Brå's boron didn't get the memo, snapping during a race to the finish line in a tussle with Soviet Alexsandr Zavyalov.

Well that has little to do with these skis, but it's fun history. Lillehammer-based Madshus is one of two Norwegian survivors of the nordic industry shake-out that occurred in the mid-70s when fiberglass skis replaced wood as the material of choice. Unlike their neighbors, the carpetbagging wax company, Madshus has been in Lillehammer for over 100 years. Historically they were a manufacturer of solid turski and fjellski (backcountry), but along the way picked up a few VM/OG medals - Madshus skis were popular among elite Norwegian women in the 60s and 70s. The acquisition of the Landsem brand in the early 80s gave the company additional market reach. In the late 1920s, skier Bror With came up with the idea of holding the toe of the boot to the ski with a clamp. The resulting company started production in the 1930s and by the late 1960s had established the 3-pin binding as "Nordic norm". Grooming was getting better, with big heavy alpine snow machines starting to be used on cross-country trails, which were now becoming wider and smoother to accommodate. (ask an old-timer about how much fun the old style windy, narrow trails were back in the day and you will wish you hadn't). Tracks became firmer, and 75mm wide bindings started being a pain in the ass because they would rub against the side of the tracks and slow the skier down. In addition, all sorts of synthetic materials that are horrific for the environment were starting to be used in the manufacture of Nordic gear. So we ended up with narrower bindings, which were paired with light, plastic or rubber sole boots. And voila, the 50mm binding revolution was sparked.

This pair is from the 80s, when 50mm was facing its deserved defeat at the hands of Rottefella NNN and Salomon SNS. The "vario" part of the name is probably because that red bit can flip either up or down. Why? Because 50mm sole thickness varied. The Dynafits used by Moose when he was at the peak of his racing career (age 9) had a thin sole (red bit would hence need to be down) but other brands had a thicker rubber sole, ergo the red bit would be up.

Aside from the sole thickness, no one really ever agreed on the best heel plate system. There were always trade-offs - weight vs control, width vs rigidity, and so on.

Cross-country track skiing had pretty might rallied around the 75mm wide, 3 or 4 pin toe-clamp style system by the mid 70s, and it worked pretty well. The concept was invented in the early part of the 20th century by an enterprising Norwegian fellow whose name I am too lazy to look up. A friend commented to him that the fellow's invention looked like a rat trap, which in Norwegian is "rote felle". See where this is heading???

Back to the 70s.

So, these types of bindings came with all types of heel plates - in this case the ones with a ridge that would be used with a boot that had a slot in the bottom of the heel that mated with the ridge. I don't know how to describe them other than that. Adidas 38mm used the same heel plate system.

These are the REAL DEAL, folks.
